One-time settlement scheme launched

• On 1 July 2019, the Uttarakhand government launched a one-time settlement scheme for those who have taken a loan of up to Rs 60 lakh from co-operative banks.
• The scheme has been launched to recover co-operative banks’ Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) worth Rs 391.50 crore which has piled up over the last 25 years.
• The 100-day scheme will last until 7 October 2019.

Guidelines on self-care interventions launched

• The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched its first guidelines on self-care interventions for health.
• The guidelines focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
• The guidelines have been launched in response to an estimate that by 2035 the world will face a shortage of nearly 13 million healthcare workers.

Jaipur listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site

• On 6 July 2019, Jaipur made an official entry in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
• The decision was taken at the 43rd session of the Unesco World Heritage Committee.
• With Jaipur’s inclusion, the number of heritage sites across India that are on the UNESCO World Heritage list has grown to 38, including 30 cultural properties, seven natural properties and one mixed site.

Bharti Airtel completes merger of TTSL

• Bharti Airtel and Bharti Hexacom announced the merger of the Consumer Mobile Businesses (CMB) of Tata Teleservices (TTSL) and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) (TTML).
• As part of the merger, Airtel will absorb TTSL’s CMB operations in 19 telecom circles — 17 under TTSL and two under TTML.
• It also agreed to take over a small portion of the unpaid spectrum liability of TTSL.

NASA tests launch-abort system

• NASA carried out a successful test of a ‘launch-abort system’ for the Orion capsule designed to take U.S. astronauts to the Moon.
• It aimed to test in almost real-life conditions the evacuation of astronauts from the capsule in the event of an explosion or rocket booster failure.
• In the test, an unmanned Orion capsule was launched by a mini-rocket.

Azim Premji to receive excellence awards

• The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) said that Mastercard CEO and President Ajay Banga and Wipro Chairman Azim Premji will receive the 2019 Global Excellence Awards at its Second Annual Leadership Summit in Washington on 11 July 2019.
• Jared Kushner, senior adviser to the President of the United States, will present awards during the summit.

Karnataka Bank launches web tool

• Karnataka Bank Ltd has launched the web tool – ‘Vasool So-Ft’ (Vasool So-Fast) – for digitalising the NPA (non-performing asset) recovery process of the bank.
• The tool for the recovery of stressed assets will provide an end-to-end digital solution.
• It will enable easy and faster processing, real-time information and immediate decision making in the recovery area.

ISRO teams up with Russian company

• The Indian Space Research Organisation has signed a contract with a Russian company Glavkosmos on 2 July 2019.
• The contract has been signed for selection support, medical examination and space training of Indian astronauts for the country’s proposed maiden manned space mission ‘Gaganyaan’.
• Glavkosmos is a Russian launch service provider and a subsidiary of the state corporation Roscosmos.

Appointments

• Nalin Shinghal has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) for five years.
• B Harideesh Kumar has been appointed as Director of Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) for a period of three years.
• Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN) has elected Manoj Kumar Nambiar, managing director of Arohan Financial Services, as its Chairman.

Tata Steel Kalinganagar joins WEF’s GLN

• Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK) has been included in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Lighthouse Network (GLN).
• GLN is a community of manufacturers showing leadership in applying Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to drive financial and operational impact.
• TSK in Odisha’s Jajpur district is the first and the only Indian manufacturing plant to be included in the GLN.

Punjab & Sind Bank sets up centralised hub

• Punjab & Sind Bank has set up a Centralised MSME & Retail Group (Cen-MARG).
• Cen-MARG will process retail and MSME loans for better efficiency of branches in business acquisition.
• Cen-MARG will be housed at its head office in New Delhi.
• It will ensure qualitative improvement in credit appraisal, improved turnaround time, uniform documentation, and efficient monitoring.

Reliance Jio ties up with Facebook

• On 3 July 2019, Reliance Jio announced a digital literacy initiative for first-time Internet users in the country.
• The name of the initiative is ‘Digital Udaan’.
• The initiative has been launched in collaboration with Facebook.
• Jio will engage with its users every Saturday to help them learn about JioPhone features, use of various apps and Internet safety including the use of Facebook.

World’s most powerful passports revealed

• Henley Passport Index 2019 was launched by Henley and Partners.
• The Indian passport has been ranked 86 with a mobility score of 58.
• Japan and Singapore hold the joint top spot on the Henley Passport Index.
• The index includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations — including micro-states and territories.

India’s 1st Design Development Centre launched

• India’s first Design Development Center ‘Fashionova’ was launched in the Textile city Surat.
• The aim of the centre is to promote the city in the field of the fashion design sector.
• Fashionova has been named in the Start-up scheme of the Government.
• The main objective of this studio is to provide a strong platform to all those who have a flair of the apparel business.

Longest electrified tunnel commissioned

• South Central Railway has commissioned the longest electrified tunnel between Cherlopalli and Rapuru stations in Andhra Pradesh.
• The length of the tunnel is 6.6 km.
• The construction of this tunnel paved the way to operate freight trains on Obulavaripalli – Venkatachalam – Krishnapatnam Port new railway line for a distance of 113 km.

India’s first highway corridors for e-vehicles

• India’s first highway corridors with charging stations for electric vehicles are expected to come up along the Delhi-Jaipur and Delhi-Agra highways by 2020.
• The e-corridors are proposed to be the first under the Ease of Doing Business Programme (EODB) of the Advance Services for Social and Administrative Reforms (ASSAR).
• Eighteen charging stations will be set up on the two routes.

Hong Kong approves over $9 million for Odisha

• The Hong Kong government has approved over $900,000 for relief and rehabilitation work in cyclone-hit Odisha.
• Odisha was hit by ‘Very severe cyclonic storm’ Fani in May 2019.
• The grants will benefit around 45,100 cyclone victims and will be used to provide hygiene kits, kitchen kits, water, education, household items and shelter kits.

Control of HFCs handed over to RBI from

• The government has taken away the powers of the National Housing Bank (NHB) to regulate housing finance companies (HFCs) and handed them to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act will be amended to give the RBI powers to regulate the HFC sector.
• NHB was part of the RBI till April 2019 when the government decided to take it over.

• World Zoonoses Day is observed every year on July 6.
• The aim of the day is to commemorate the scientific achievement of administering first vaccination against a zoonotic disease.
• Zoonoses are infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites that spread between animals and humans.
